What will martial arts really cost?
Monthly tuition is only part of the bill. Pick a style to load typical figures for a US kids' program, then type in the numbers from the school's own quote to see the full cost for the first year and beyond.
How to use these numbers
The figures that load with each style are typical starting points for a children's program at a commercial school in a mid-sized American city, not quotes. Prices swing a long way by region: big-city schools and those with unlimited classes charge more, while community programs run by park districts, YMCAs and volunteer clubs can cost a fraction of the commercial price. Judo and wrestling are often the cheapest because so many clubs are nonprofits, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies often sit at the top of the range but rarely charge for belts.
The cost that surprises most families is belt testing. A school that tests every two or three months at $50 to $75 a time adds several hundred dollars a year, and black belt tests can run into the hundreds on their own. The second surprise is the upgrade offered a few months in, often called a black belt club or leadership program, which raises the monthly fee in exchange for extra classes or a guaranteed path to black belt. Neither is a red flag by itself, but both belong in your sums before you sign. Our guides to costs by style and martial arts contracts explain what to ask.
